Rug up well if you’re heading out for the Dawn Service. But it’s not just the cold temperatures to contend with, as a “week long rain event” hits.
A triple whammy of long weekend weather has cranked up – there’ll be shiver inducing temperatures for Anzac Day Dawn Services in many areas; a “week long rain event” in Queensland progressing inland and then south; and downpours rolling into Western Australia.
“Chilly mornings are developing,” Sky News Weather senior meteorologist Tom Saunders said.
“For the Dawn Service it will be below 10C for Victoria, Tasmania and the New South Wales ranges”.
Hobart is looking at a 9C low on Monday morning while in Melbourne it may also bottom out at 9am at dawn. Expect a degree or so colder at services held in inland towns.
Add a beanie to the scarf in Canberra where 5C is likely first thing.
Warmer in Adelaide at 16C with similar for Perth. All these services should remain dry.
Not so for Sydney where a shower could make an appearance as the mercury falls to 15C on Monday morning. A possible shower in Brisbane and 17C while Darwin is dry and dropping to 25C.

‘Week long rain event’
In Queensland its all about the absolute soaking the area could get. Indeed, is getting.
Mr Saunders said a “week long rain event” is in progress with an area from Townsville to north of Cooktown at risk.
Cooktown saw 45mm of rain on Saturday with up to 70mm due on Sunday and 25-50mm on Monday.
Isolated falls of 500m or more aren’t out of the question.
Up to 180mm of rain could come down on Cairns between Sunday and Wednesday with 50-80mm on Monday.
Townsville could see around 50mm over the coming days.
All that moisture will the head inland and swirl around dumping some decent falls on the outback. Longreach, for instance, could see 25-50mm of precipitation on Monday and up to another 25mm on Tuesday.
That will all be very good news for farmers.
And while the outback rain won’t be at Far North Queensland levels of rain, 25-50mm in the gauge won’t be rare across northeast South Australia as well as the southern NT and western Queensland.
“That’s a season worth of rain falling in one week and will lead to some outback flooding,” said Mr Saunders.
Cooper Pedy, for instance, could get 8-20mm on Sunday and another 10mm on Monday.
“Eventually all this rain will spread down to southeast Australia through the early part of next week.”
Long weekend weather in the capitals
Adelaide will mostly bypass the wet with a high 26C on Sunday and 25C on Monday.
Soggier in Perth which with several rain bands rolling through. That gets going on Monday with up to 20mm in the gauge on Tuesday. On Sunday, however, it’s bright sunshine and blue skies in the WA capital with maximums climbing towards 30C.
Mostly dry in Darwin with 34C highs but a thunderstorm could roll through on Tuesday.
Scattered showers throughout the weekend in Brisbane but they won’t bring a huge amount of rain – just a sprinkling. Sunday and Monday highs will be in the mid-twenties.
Some falls for Sydney this long weekend with at least 5mm most days until midweek. Temperatures will hover around the low twenties.
It will struggle to get to 20C in Canberra for the coming days, mostly settling just shy of that point. But it will be for the most part dry in the capital.
Also dry in Melbourne over the long weekend with 20-22C 3pm maximums and chilly starts. Showers could begin rolling through from late on Tuesday.
High teens maximums in Hobart rising into the low twenties from Wednesday of next week. That will coincide with a few showers coming through the city.
