Police are looking for a young couple who they believe can help with their inquiries after a taxi driver was allegedly assaulted in Sydney.

Police are searching for a couple who were in the vicinity of an assault on a taxi driver in Sydney’s CBD overnight.

The 58-year-old taxi driver was left hospitalised with head and facial injuries.

A man and woman allegedly fled the scene after members of the public intervened in the assault.

Police say the couple were picked up by the taxi on Hunter St at around 11pm on Monday evening.

After travelling a short distance, the taxi stopped on Macquarie St where an argument broke out and the taxi driver was allegedly assaulted.

The couple fled and were last seen on Castlereagh St, according to police. The driver was treated by paramedics and taken to St Vincent’s Hospital.

He is reported to be in a stable condition.

Investigators released CCTV footage of two people they believe could assist in their inquiries.

The man is described as being of Indian subcontinental appearance, about 200cm tall, slim build, with short black hair and clean shaven.

He is shown wearing a white long-sleeve jumper, black pants and white shoes.

The woman depicted is described as being of caucasian appearance, about 155cm tall, with long blonde hair. She is shown wearing a dark coloured winter coat and dark coloured pants.

On Monday police charged a man with assaulting two taxi drivers in a separate incident last month.

Emergency services were called to Mullens St, Balmain following reports of a brawl just before 10.30pm on Saturday, May 28.

The man was allegedly being dropped off by a taxi in the area when he became aggressive towards the 50-year-old driver.

A 29-year-old driver attempted to intervene and both were assaulted by the passenger, police allege.

It is not suggested the two incidents are related.

Both taxi drivers were treated by paramedics for injuries to their faces and one was taken to hospital with a significant laceration above his right eye.
